Gwynant and Deri Fledge

Gwynant and Deri Fledge

Fledging Videos, Stats, and Key Dates

It's been a busy week at the Dyfi nest - both Gwynant and Deri have fledged, five days apart.

Last Sunday, July 27th, Gwynant fledged at the very early age of 49 days, right at the start of the fledging window really.

Deri hatched three days after her brother so we didn't expect her to fledge for several more days. Being a female usually adds a day or two onto the fledging age also.

She used this time productively and ate as much as she could when a fish meal presented itself - even from her brother's back!

Deri fledged on Friday, August 1st at 13:24

Both Gwynant and Deri fledged right at the earliest opportunity, 49 days old (male) and 51 days old (female). No doubt that not competing with a third sibling for food and space helped their development, as it did both females last year. Cerist and Clarach both fledged at exactly the same time as Deri in 2013 - 51 days old.

Here are the up-to-date statistics of the Dyfi ospreys this year:

Both Gwynant and Deri will stay around the nest and perches for some time yet - they probably won't depart until September.

Glesni, however, will probably go a little earlier than her chicks and Monty. She stayed until August 31st in 2013, after a very late breeding season - will she go a bit earlier this year?

Finally, many congratulations to Jo Cheetham who, after seeing Gwynant fledge from a packed 360 Observatory last Sunday, sent us this photograph of that very special and historical moment.

Many thanks Jo!
