HAT-TRICK - All Three Fledge Successfully

HAT-TRICK - All Three Fledge Successfully

Gwenlais fledges

All three youngsters have fledged successfully - within 24-hours of each other.

Despite being the youngest of the three, as most people predicted, it was Senni - the only male of the brood - that flew first.

A few hours later yesterday his sister Gwenlais joined him in the skies. Then, at first light this mornng, Coron- the heaviest bird that we have ever ringed at this nest - finally took off for her maiden flight.

Here are the exact dates and times:

  • ๐Ÿฆ… SENNI Fledges at 10:51 on 14th July at 51.2 days old
  • ๐Ÿฆ… GWENLAIS Fledges at 16:36 on 14th July at 54.6 days old
  • ๐Ÿฆ… CORON Fledges at 06:14 on 15th July at 53.9 days old

And here are the three magical moments when each bird became airborne for the first time:

So what happens now?

This morning, Coron became the 34th youngster to fledge this nest since 2011. Being novice first-time fliers, their biggest risk factor now is accidents. Thankfully all three have been flying around today with great confidence and landing skills.

For context, of the 34 birds to have fledged at the Dyfi, we've only lost one between fledging and migration, that was Ceri in 2016.

All five ospreys will stay around for at least another month, so if you're visiting, now is a great time to come and take some flight-shots from the Observatory.

Telyn will probably migrate first from mid-August onwards, with the other four leaving, independently of each other, at various times between Telyn going and early September. Idris will probably migrate last, in the knowedge that all of his family have gone. If I had to guess, around 1st September.

The Dyfi Wildlife Centre and Dyfi Osprey Project are open every day 10am โ€“ 5pm until then.
