Funny isn't it? We spent the last few weeks hoping for good weather so that the ospreys would have a good start to their migration only for two of them to leave in the worst weather possible. Now, two weeks exactly after Dulas left, we're having a bit of an Indian summer as Dulas approaches Senegal. No doubt it will be hotter in Wales by the end of the week than it will in west Africa!
Walking down the boardwalk at Cors Dyfi this evening seemed a little strange. It felt like summer but there were no ospreys to be seen or heard; in fact, there were no summer migrants whatsoever. Then, as I turned around to go back to the office to upload the latest news from Africa, this male Stonechat popped up in front of me as if to say - "don't forget those of us that stay all year round". He was a juvenile, hatched this summer, and was chirping away. I left the reserve feeling a little happier than when I arrived.
Exactly two weeks ago Dulas had just started to roost for his first night alone on a wind turbine in the North Sea of all places, and Leri was just hours away from leaving on her migration - the Stonechat has probably been around all along. Maybe we're all guilty sometimes of favouring one species over another. I certainly am.
