Blue Z5: Another Dyfi Grandchild Returns to Wales

Blue Z5: Another Dyfi Grandchild Returns to Wales

Blue Z5

An intruding female osprey made the briefest of touchdowns on the nest at 05:56 yesterday morning.

For whatever reason this summer, not one of the intruding ospreys around the Dyfi nest for the last few weeks would come close enough for us to be able to identify it based on ring numbers, and there's been plenty of them.

This all changed yesterday morning just after daybreak.

The main Live Streaming camera we've had since 2015 broke down last month after seven years' continuous service. It wouldn't have had the resolution to catch this ring number anyway - it all happened so quickly.

Here's the video - don't blink:

Blue Z5 is Tegid's (2016) daughter from 2020, so a two-year-old back in the UK.

This sighting is doubly significant as Blue Z5's full brother from the same 2020 nest-brood was spotted on the Dyfi nest earlier in the summer, Blue KC8. So both Z5 and KC8 are Monty and Glesni's 'grandkids'.

  • 8. Blue ๐ŸŸฆ Z5, 11th August. A 2020 female - Tegid's daughter from private north Wales nest.

Thank you to everyone that has helped with the camera appeal this year - the video you saw above was a combination of two cameras - the two new 2022 ones. We would never have made an identification without this cutting edge tech.

Your donation has truly helped us in Wales get a clearer picture of osprey population movement, growth and ecology. Thank you.

And Finally

Many congratulations to The Friends Of The Ospreys, whose private nest they manage where Z5 came from.

Remarkably, this is the third intruder we've seen this year from this same private nest โ€“ KC1, a male from the previous year (2019) landed here briefly at the beginning of May. It's a great feeling when one of your birds return as adults, very well done to The Friends Of The Ospreys.
