Dyfi – Returning Ospreys

Each year once the breeding pairs of ospreys have safely returned or established themselves with new mates our attention turns to which other birds might be sighted this year. Ospreys often make their first return to the UK as two-year-olds, it is rare for them to breed in the year of their first return. Instead they visit a number of different areas looking for potential mates and territories for the following or subsequent years. 

The table below shows which of the Dyfi chicks have been sighted as adults. 

 

  1. Clarach (2013) — 1st spotted back in Wales in 2016, bred in Aberfoyle, Scotland for at least 3 years.
  2. Gwynant (2014) — 1st spotted back in Wales in 2018, no records since.
  3. Merin (2015) — 1st (failed) breeding attempt in Denmark 2018; breeding in Cumbria 2021 onwards.
  4. Tegid (2016) — breeding in North Wales since 2020 at a private nest.
  5. Aeron (2017) — breeding in North Wales since 2021 with a Poole Harbour female, Blue 014 (2018).
  6. Dinas (2018) — 1st returned to Wales in 2020, breeding in 2022 with a Poole Harbour female, Blue 019 (2019).
  7. Hesgyn (2019) — 1st spotted back in Wales in 2021; found dead in Cricieth, 2022.

  9. Teifi (2020) — spotted in Santander Bay (northern Spain) in May 2022 as a two-year-old.
