HAT-TRICK! Chicks 2 & 3 Hatch

HAT-TRICK! Chicks 2 & 3 Hatch

Welcome Chicks 2 and 3!

Following a fairly standard hatching of the first chick last week on 29th May, events started to get a little bit more hairy this week.

Like clockwork, the first chick had hatched 37 days after the egg being laid - exactly the same as the previous two years that Glesni has been with Monty on the Dyfi. Two days later, the second chick emerged into the world - just like this..

By the time the second chick had made an appearance, so had the worst summer storm to hit the Dyfi since the "Perfect Storm" of 2012 - three years ago to the day almost. Despite matching the 2012 storm for ferocity and wind strength, mercifully, this one was nowhere near as persistent. Gusts of up to 70 mph blasted and pounded the nest for a 'mere' eight hours - just a slight inconvenience for ospreys. Admittedly though, we were a bit apprehensive and just a tad worried.

We needn't have been.

By Tuesday evening, the worst of the weather had moved east leaving the Dyfi in relative calm again. By 9pm Glesni's third chick had hatched, the first time she has produced three youngsters. By the following morning, all three were tucking into a large trout. The odd scuffle was also reported!

Here are some stats for you:

We've had a mystery male osprey around this week also - yesterday we managed to get him on camera, albeit at quite a distance. Did he have a tracker on his back? We don't think so. Is he ringed? Too far to see. We keep looking up - it will happen one day...

As I write all is calm, all the family are doing great and Bob 1 is a week old today. Don't time fly when you're having fun!
