Today is DAY 35 of incubation.

We're starting a weekend appeal to fundraise £2,000 for a Defibrillator at DOP. Could you help us raise the money please?

Around 40,000 people visit DOP every summer and although all the staff are First Aid trained, in the event of a cardiac arrest, all we can currently do is CPR.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

Did you know?

• 20% of heart attacks occur in public places
• When someone has a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces their chances of survival by 7-10%
• If a defibrillator is used and effective CPR is performed within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, survival chances increase from 6% to 74%
• Without immediate treatment, 90-95% of sudden cardiac arrest victims will die

Like most osprey projects, DOP is in a rural location so getting an ambulance to us will take much longer than if we were in a town or city. The emergency services average response time to a cardiac event-related incident in an urban area is 11 minutes; at DOP this response time could be much longer.

The statistics are brutal: Wait more than 15 minutes after a cardiac arrest without First Aid and you're almost certainly dead or severely brain damaged. With a defibrillator and CPR a DOP First Aider can get to you within three to five minutes and your chances of surviving are increased exponentially - three out of four will survive.

Guess the Hatching Competition

So, easy-peasy same as usual but this year it's £5 per guess and you can have as many guesses as you like. You need to correctly guess the day and time of the FIRST hatching only.

Friday - DAY 35
Saturday - DAY 36
Sunday - DAY 37

Osprey (first) eggs usually hatch on DAY 37, but Glesni laid her first egg very early on April 14th, during the night time actually, so this will need to be taken into account. Glesni and Monty have also had good weather and very little disturbance - this may also have an effect of reducing slightly chick development time.
