The 'Mary Evans' Staircase

The Mary Evans staircase was hand built in Welsh oak by local carpenter Carwyn Lloyd Jones of Timber Design Wales. The staircase represents the ship the 'Mary Evans', the largest boat ever built on the Dyfi River.

Building the Mary Evans stairs

Although Carwyn's electric tools would have been out of place in the 1860s many of the techniques he used to build the staircase would have been used by the carpenters building the ships in the small riverside shipyards of days gone by.

The original 'Mary Evans' was built at Morben on the Dyfi River in 1867. She was built for John Evans who was a local timber merchant and whose family had long been associated with the river, The 'Mary Evans' was a 258 ton barque, a ship with three masts.
