Ceulan set off from the Dyfi six weeks ago today; the temperature when he left was 13°C. The temperature where he is today, just south of the Senegal River, is 34°C. Some change!

This is where Ceulan was last night..

Ceulan arrived in this area exactly a month ago today - September 15th. Favouring the north side of the river (geographically Mauritania) to start with, he now seems well bedded-in on the south side - geographically Senegal. He appears to be forming a pattern too: fishing and eating during the daytime on the tributaries and irrigation canals of the great river, and then roosting by night around five miles south.

Next-to-no change in a whole month is surely a positive sign. Ceulan must be fishing and eating well, otherwise he would almost certainly have moved on.

With a month on the Senegal River under his belt, what now? Notice that he has hardly ventured onto the great river itself, reminiscent of his brothers and sister this time last year. No doubt established adult ospreys will be holding loose territories here and defending good fishing spots and perches (like a few fishermen I know!).

Just as we saw last year, these smaller waterways will dry up over the coming months as the dry season really kicks in. Ceulan will have to move somewhere, but how far and when?

Time will tell, but for now, the first six weeks have been textbook migration with no scares or worries along the way. The tracker is working well and sending data back every two days as it should. Positive news all round, and long may it continue.
