Chick Details - 2011

Up to July 19th we had no idea whether we had male, female, or a mixture of both chicks, although many visitors and volunteers did guess correctly!. Roy Dennis MBE came down from Scotland along with Tony Cross from the Welsh Kite Trust to ring and satellite tag our birds for us. Very soon it became evident that we had two boys and one girl. Both the male chicks were almost identical in weight and wing measurements with the female being around 10% heavier which is exactly what we would expect.

Tony Cross gives one of the male chicks, Einion, his Darvic ring - Blue DH                                                                  © Emyr Evans/MWTEinion is ringed.jpg

Both Dulas and Leri migrated at the exact same age - 14 weeks old, slightly later than the average for ospreys by about a week. Their brother started his migration 11 days earlier in age. Did those extra five days of incubation in the egg (42 days versus average 37 days) mean that Einion was developmentally more advanced by the time he hatched?
